Tucked in the heart of West Virginia, New River Gorge is one of those places that grabs you by the hiking boots and doesn’t let go. Wild? Yes. Wonderful? Absolutely. And after a long workweek and a short road trip, it was exactly the kind of escape we needed.

Basecamp: The Outpost

We pitched our tent at The Outpost (tagline: Where Wild Meets Wonderful) – and they nailed it. This wasn’t your average rugged campsite. Our tent platform in the woods came with a roof (luxury!), table and chairs, a grill, and even a Solo Stove for fireside hangs. The bathhouse was way better than expected, clean and only mildly smelled like adventure. Add in the raccoons that rolled up at 2am looking for snacks and you’ve got yourself a real wilderness experience with a side of glamping.

White Water, Dad Jokes & IPAs

Our Saturday morning started with a shot of adrenaline – white water rafting with Adventures on the Gorge. Our guide Dave had a full arsenal of dad jokes (10/10 delivery), but he also knew how to get us through the rapids like pros. We paddled down a 7-mile stretch of the New River – we had water in our faces, adrenaline in our veins, and a raft full of new best friends. And when it was over? Coolers of cold drinks awaited us on the bus. An IPA never tasted so victorious.

Pizza, Pines & Precipices

Post-rafting hunger hit hard, and Pies & Pints in Fayetteville had just what we needed: crispy, creative pizza that fueled the rest of the day’s adventure. With full bellies, we hit the Endless Wall Trail  to hike a few stunning miles of forest, rhododendrons, and jaw-dropping cliffside views. Watch your step – the drop-offs are no joke – but the views of climbers scaling sandstone walls and the river winding nearly 1,000 feet below? Worth every step.

Music, Gear & Midnight Breezes

Back at camp, we grilled up dinner, listened to live music under the stars, and crashed in our Big Agnes tent (with a GaiaLoop mattress for peak cozy). Sleeping outside, with the hum of the forest all around… this is why we do what we do.

Morning Glory at the Cathedral Café

On Sunday, we packed up and grabbed breakfast at Cathedral Café, a gem in downtown Fayetteville set inside a restored 1905 church. Stained glass, great coffee, and locals who know what’s up – it’s everything a trail-weary adventurer could want.

One Last Hike: Long Point

Before heading home, we knocked out the Long Point Trail. This 3-mile out-and-back trek rewards you with front-row views of the legendary New River Gorge Bridge. Fun fact: it’s the longest single-span arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. The final steps to the overlook can feel a little dicey as the trail narrows and drops off.

TL;DR:

If you like your adventures wild, your pizza wood-fired, and your tent setup just cozy enough to forget the raccoons – New River Gorge is calling. Raft, hike, eat, repeat. This place might just be our new favorite.
